Sumter County Longbeards Chapter

A history of dedicated service to our community.

The Sumter County Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation was re-organized on September 12, 2006 and under the direction of President, Stoney Maddox held its first very successful heritage banquet approximately 30 days later in October. Your local chapter has continued this level of hard work and volunteerism by coordinating four more fundraising banquets since that time and received various national awards including the prestigious L. A. Dixon Memorial Award as Second Place-Best of the Best Local Chapter for two consecutive years! These awards are truly a reflection of the joint efforts of committee volunteers and community supporters. Past Chapter Presidents include Stoney Maddox and Greg Furlong. Their dedicated service is greatly appreciated!
Chapter committee members, local businesses and organizations have teamed up in order to provide local outdoor events for Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin’ Sportsmen and our largest undertaking…the annual J.A.K.E.S. Fishing Day Event that in 2010 was attended by over 1200 people including 663 registered J.A.K.E.S.! Education and service to others is an important part of this chapter’s mission to give back to the community in which we live! The National Archery in the Schools Program is now a part of curriculum in all but one middle school in Sumter County because of this chapter’s commitment to educate our young people and due to the concentrated efforts of one of its members, Gary Marriage who currently serves as the chapter volunteer coordinator for the J.A.K.E.S outreach program. The Sumter County Longbeards also participate in the NWTF’s “Turkey Hunters Care” program by donating turkeys to area charities during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Over the past several years we have gladly served approximately 300 families.
The Sumter County Longbeards NWTF Chapter thanks each and every individual, business and organization who has answered our calls for donations and financial support! It is clear that folks in Sumter County realize the importance of freedom and traditions that are ours to enjoy because of volunteers who work to conserve, preserve and protect these liberties! Remember…OUR rights as American Citizens are in constant danger and the future of traditional outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and camping, depends on YOU!   Join one of the largest conservation organizations in the United States, the National Wild Turkey Federation. The Sumter County Longbeards Chapter needs volunteers who want to help! Please contact any chapter officer or committee member for more information on scheduled meetings and upcoming events.
